A Maze’n Farmyard is a family entertainment center in Eden Valley, Minnesota. Perfect for children of all ages, guests of the center can enjoy everything from a permanent maze and bounce barn to train rides and a giant slide. Beyond that, A Maze’n Farmyard maintains several animal spaces where children can pet and feed such animals as goats.
Goats are known for their ability to pasture on virtually anything, including bark, green grass, shrubs, and small trees. Due to the fact that goats enjoy variety, they will go for whatever nutritious plant is around them. Because of this tendency to browse, goats must only be exposed to food that is good for them. Hay is the most common source of food for goats. In fact, it’s suggested that hay makes up about 90 percent to 100 percent of a goat’s diet. Packed with nutrients that goats need, a variety of hay species is usually available throughout the year, including alfalfa and bermuda hay. On average, goats need 2-4 pounds of hay each day, minus whatever they might browse on if they are put out to pasture. Chaffhaye, which is just grass or alfalfa that has been cut early on, is also a good source of food for goats. This type of food ferments in its bag, thus adding more nutrients and minerals to the food and making it easier for goats to digest. Many goats also enjoy eating grain, but they usually cannot survive on grain alone. Instead, grain should comprise up to 10 percent of a goat’s diet and be used to complement hay or pasture as a food source. Finally, goats love snacking. Good snacks for goats include sweet food, weeds, and human food. Since these foods typically do not have many nutrients, it’s not a good idea to feed goats a lot of snacks.
